Sean Smokey Smullen Election campaign

Noticed a town council election candidate poster this morning. He had a YouTube logo on it with the words "View my personal message online".

I can't recall ever seeing an election poster with a YouTube logo before but the simple addition of that logo made him stand out from all the others.

Anyone seen other candidates doing something similar?

Who will you give a raspberry to today?

Reading 'The Art of Possibility' on the way to work right now and thought this was wonderful.

At the holocaust memorial in Boston there are stories inscribed on pillars about the cruelty and suffering in the death camps. One of the pillars has a different kind of story.

It's about a little girl called Ilse and her childhood friend Guerda who were both in Auschwitz.

Guerda remembers that Ilse, who was 6, found a single raspberry in the camp one morning.

She carried it with her all day long in a protected place in her pocket. That evening, her eyes shining with happiness, she presented it to her friend Guerda on a leaf.

"Imagine a world", writes Guerda, "in which your entire posession is one raspberry, and you give it to your friend."

The Field of Possibility

I first read this parable in Benjamin Zander's Book "The Art of Possibility". Zander said that his father used this parable to explain to him that we have a limited knowledge and understanding of the nature of the girls the universe holds in store for us.

If you've never head of Benjamin Zander, take a look at this Ted talk. I can't think of a better use of 20 minutes than watch this video.

The Trouble with Working Women - Why Can't a Woman Succeed like a Man? BBC2 Tonight @ 10pm

Monday 18 May | 9:00pm - 10:00pm | BBC2

1/2 - Why Can't a Woman Succeed like a Man?

OK ladies. Prepare to get cross. Because this is a programme about why so few women get the top jobs. And it's not just the subject that may infuriate you: it's peppered with sexist remarks and stereotypical attitudes, mainly from the vox pops, but some from reporter Justin Rowlatt. Let's hope he's just being provocative.

But there's a lot to think about, too: Erin Pizzey makes a startling point, and Rosie Boycott is as interesting as ever. No surprises, though, that the main reason the sexes have varying levels of success is not to do with the way their brains are wired, but with who looks after their children.

Irish Summer Weather Prediction 2009

(download)

This was broadcast on RTE Radio 1 on Saturday 16th May 2009.

The subject is one we all want the answer to - what is the weather going to be like in Ireland this summer.

Taking part in the (sometimes) heated debate are:

Evelyn Cusack - Met Eireann

TP O'Conchuir - a fokelorist and weather expert from Kerry who has been observing local weather signs for many years.

Ken Ring - Long range weather forecaster from New Zealand.

As you might expect, Evelyn Cusack defends the science of weather forecasting and is very dismissive of O'Conchuir and Ring. She is actually quite annoying at times during the interview as she talks over other guests but they hold their own very well.

And the big question - what is the Irish summer going to be like.

O'Conchuir says we'll have about 6 weeks of good weather during the summer months - but no specifics as to the dates but "it won't be a bad summer"

Ring says the following as posted on his website http://www.predictweather.com

-------------------

Summer may be fairly wet over some months but not as bad as last year. There may be more sunshine this year, with temperatures not all that high. On the whole consistently warmer days may not arrive for most until later in the season, probably in the start of and then after June.

MAY; wet in the NORTH and WEST off and on, for the whole month, but  for the last half of the month some sunny days in the EAST. In the SOUTH, possibly 10 days of overcast skies, then quite settled weather for the second half of the month.

JUNE, dry for the first fortnight over most of the country and temperatures above 20degC.

JULY, a mainly wet month for all, but the north, west and east may be drier between 12th-17th.

AUGUST, a wet month for all, with only the SOUTH getting a good sunny period between 25th-30th.

SEPTEMBER, likely to be the warmest and most summery month for all, with best of summer weather between 6th-17th for the whole country.

So for all; time to plan holidays and picnics may be:

May (good in E and S in second half)
June 2nd-11th
July (only good in N and E, 12th-17th)
Aug (only good in last week in S and E)
Sept, 6th-17th (longer in W)

TV Film Pick for tonight - BBC1 @ 10.50 pm - Gregory's Girl

If you've not seen this, you should. Endearing and funny teenage coming of age story set in the 80's. Watched this in the 80's when I was a teen myself and remember indentifying with it. Haven't seen it since then, so I am looking forward to viewing for the second time.

Radio Times summary:

This is a case of near-faultless film-making from Bill Forsyth, who has never really fulfilled his early promise under the auspices of Hollywood. As director, he keeps a wry eye on the triangle linking school goalkeeper John Gordon-Sinclair (then Gordon John), centre forward Dee Hepburn and her pal Clare Grogan. But it is as scriptwriter that Forsyth excels, capturing the anxieties and insecurities of teen love and the language of the playground with consummate skill. He also creates a glorious array of secondary characters, including Robert Buchanan and William Greenlees as Sinclair's lovelorn mates, Allison Forster as the clued-up younger sister, and Chic Murray as the laconic headmaster.
